We are slackers!

Sorry folks for our lack of posts. I wish I could say we have been busy working away on house projects, but alas, thats not the case. We did recently purchase a 1920’s butlers pantry and stripped most of the laquer paint off of the wood and hardware. Unfortunately, the summer heat is at its peak and we can’t bring ourselves to get back to work. Once the weather cools off (or maybe during the week nights), we plan on finishing the pantry off and installing it into our kitchen wall. Its sure to be a perfect fit for the bungalow.

Other recent purchases include an old bungalow door, that is also in need of repair, and a pair of antique corbels that I am planning on painting and then installing into our header above the breakfast bar in the kitchen. (Hard to picture, but we’ll post pictures if we ever get around to working on the house again. Ha!)

We do hope to have all of the above purchases refinished and installed before our fall party in September. Wish us luck!

We’ll post some pictures of our bungalow goodies soon. :)

Art coming to the BeltLine, but first…

We need volunteers to help with cleaning up the area surrounding the trail. Join us at Gordon-White Park at 9am on May 1st to help out the West End and the wonderful BeltLine Project!

More information can be found on the BeltLine’s website.

Blueberry plants have arrived

Our second project for Easter weekend was planting our blueberry plants from Waters Blueberry Farm. After two trips for Peat Moss and mulch (we underestimated the amount,) we have three plants that should yield blueberries all summer long! Kudos to Kevin for doing most of the work while I stained the bench.

We’ll keep you updated on their growth!

Here are some pics…

And its planted (we didn’t get a completed picture of all the plants with mulch.. oh well.)

No rain, time to stain…

Since we had beautiful weather this Easter weekend, Kevin and I decided to tackle a few projects. First up to bat, staining a bench and table set that our dear friend Dee made for us as a wedding gift. I decided to go with “Barn Red” as my stain of choice, its also a sealant all-in-one which made the project a lot simpler. The best part, the stain didn’t cover up the sweet message Dee wrote on the bottom of the bench!

Take a look!

Welcome the newest addition to the Beecher family!

Driving to work one day last week, we spotted a little pup begging for food. His sweet little face caught my attention and I quickly looked at Kevin and said, “If that dog is there on the way home, we’re picking him up and finding a home for him.” Now, this happens on a semi-regular basis for us though the dog is seldom there on the return drive home. Last year, we found homes for four abandoned pets and we intend to do the same this year. Since the little guy was in the same spot on our return trip, we pulled over and took him home. We’ve been keeping an eye out for signs for a missing dog, but have seen none. We also reached out on our social networks to search for a home. We had a few people interested, but no serious bites. While we were working on finding a home, we fell in love. The pup gets along with our other dogs and is pretty well behaved. We can’t help but feel like this little guy was meant to be a part of our family. We found him on Fox street, so naturally we named him Fox.

Here is our newest family member!

Spring is almost here: Time for the tour of homes!

Its a little more than a month away from West End’s annual Tour of Homes and Festival: West Fest.

The Festival will be held on the weekend of May 7th through the 9th, with a benefit concert at The Wren’s Nest to kick things off on Friday night. The Tour of Homes is not to be missed as many of West Ends historical treasures will be open to tour goers. This year, we are also adding a festival to the weekend event to be held at our new Gordon White Park on the Beltline.

Be sure to mark your calendar and join us on May 7th through the 9th for what is sure to be a gorgeous weekend in Atlanta’s oldest neighborhood!

Check out West Fest’s website for more details!

Spring is almost here. Hooray!

The weather this weekend was gorgeous! Staying indoors would have been a crime. Instead we headed to Home Depot for a few plants and planters so we could begin our spring planting. While we have big plans for a garden and a nicely landscaped yard this year,  we are still a few weeks away from jumping head first into those projects.  To get our feet wet (and our hands dirty) for the first time this season, we decided to start off easy with a couple rosemary plants for our front steps and some flowers for our hanging planters on our porch. Nothing too impressive, but it was nice to play in the dirt for the first time this year. Here’s hoping for warmer weather so we can tackle the bigger projects around the bungalow’s yard. For now, enjoy some pictures of our weekend project and as always, stay tuned….

Snow Day… well, days to be more accurate

We have had quite a winter in the South, so I thought I would share some pictures of our most recent snow. (We missed the first dusting while we were on our honeymoon, which we had hoped would also be the last dusting we would receive this year.) Alas, mother nature had other plans. The good news is that the insects won’t be as terrible this summer!

Here are a few snapshots of a snowy West End. Enjoy!

Update on Ol’ Burney and other happenings…

We posted awhile back that the burned up house across the street from us was purchased and that work had begun. We are pleased to announce that Ol’ Burney is almost finished being renovated. It has been converted from a double shotgun duplex to a single family home and has received a facelift. (Originally the plans called for a horrible pumpkin orange paint job, but after some neighborhood objections, the house was repainted a more pleasing yellow and grey/ blue.

Getting a new paint job

The painting is still in progress, so we will post an update once its completed and some landscaping has been done. But its great to see another historic home getting some much needed TLC.

The excitement doesn’t stop there however. Another house on our block has been purchased and is slated to be completely renovated in the next 60 days. It also had some extensive fire damage, but already a crew is hard at work scraping away old paint and damaged wood. Here’s a picture of the stripped down exterior; we’ll be sure to post pictures of its progress as well.

Another home off the market :)

We had the pleasure of meeting our soon-to-be new neighbor and are happy to welcome him to the neighborhood in 2 months. He also has plans to adopt a Weimaraner  puppy, which I think may be almost as exciting as his home renovation.

Stay tuned for more updates on the progress of these homes….

Ol’ Burney gets renovated

Since moving in over a year ago, we have had a few neighboring houses fixed up and some new neighbors moving in. Still, our street has remained pretty vacant, especially the burned up house directly across the street from us. Its been up for auction many times with quite a few people who have supposedly purchased it, but it remained vacant, untouched. Our realtor (and West End neighbor) Nia Knowles had it right before we even moved in: “That ones going to be there for a hot minute!”

The hot minute has passed; this month Ol’ Burney received some TLC and renovations have officially begun. It was purchased by an investor who owns a few other homes in the neighborhood. We’ve seen the renovations of his other properties and they have been top notch, so we are excited to see the much needed change that is coming to Beecher Street.

Ol' Burney

Ol’ Burney is a turn of the century double shotgun style bungalow. The duplex had been previously renovated and was quite nice on the inside. Our friends and neighbors on Grady Place actually were under contract on this house when it was broken into and set on fire (days before their closing!) Needless to say, they never moved in. Despite the fire damage, the house still has a ton of potential. Our only concern with it being renovated was that it would remain a duplex. We quickly informed the general contractor and owner of the house that the historic district mandates that all homes be converted to single family housing.

We are excited to see the changes to Ol’ Burney and the continuing new life that is coming to Beecher Street! Stay tuned for more updates as another West End home is restored to its beauty in the coming weeks.
